Lawrence Nault is a Canadian author, filmmaker, and independent researcher based in Alberta's Badlands. His work spans speculative fiction, documentary filmmaking, privacy, technology governance, environmental accountability, and public policy.
Drawing on a background in policy, governance, risk, and compliance, Nault examines how decisions about land, information, technology, and natural resources affect individuals, communities, and the environment. His research and public-policy work address issues ranging from personal data collection and surveillance to artificial intelligence infrastructure, energy demands, land use, and public accountability.
As an author, he explores many of these same questions through young adult eco-fiction and adult speculative fiction, using imagined worlds to examine the human and environmental consequences of technological and societal change. His documentary work similarly reflects an interest in the relationship between individuals, place, and the systems that shape their lives.
Working independently from Alberta's Badlands, Nault brings together creative storytelling and policy analysis to examine a recurring question: who controls the systems we depend upon, and who bears the consequences of the decisions made about them?
